Since my master’s in anthropology, I have been interested in environmental issues, particularly conflicts surrounding forests in the Philippines. During my master’s, I accompanied environmental activists and walked through densely vegetated forests to understand how confiscating chainsaws balances social and ecological challenges in rural Palawan. Having worked on deforestation, my PhD project examines the different approaches to reforesting an altered archipelago. Following scientists, civil society groups, and governmental agencies in the central Philippines, I aim to show that focusing on the perspectives of and narratives about tree species offers insights into various notions of future forest landscapes that already shape today’s tree planting efforts.
